3rd International Railway Symposium in Aachen

The Research Center Railways (RCR) of RWTH Aachen University held the 3rd International Railway Symposium Aachen (IRSA) from 21 - 23 November 2021. Due to the Corona pandemic, a purely face-to-face conference was not possible, so that a hybrid event was held. Thus, applying the "2G+ rule", about 80 people were able to attend the conference on site. Another 80 people were also connected via streaming video.

After the welcome by Rector Prof. Ulrich RĂ¼diger and greetings by NRW state secretary Hendrik Schulte, four keynote lectures followed. Carlo Borghini, Head of Shift2Rail Joint Undertaking, presented the EU's next railway research programme. Mesela Nhlapo, Head of the African Rail Industry Association, promoted investments in rail transport in her home country South Africa. Volker Kefer, President of the Association of German Engineers and former long-time member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Bahn AG discussed how the ambitious goals of the German government for a modal shift to rail can be achieved. Ansgar Brockmeyer, Vice President and Sales Manager of this year's main sponsor Stadler, gave an insight into modern energy supply for electric drives.

A total of 44 technical and scientific presentations were given. One of the main topics was digitalisation, which will be the key driver for almost all topics of the railway system in the next years. The RCR hopes that IRSA 2023 can be completely held on site again in two years' time.

Many thanks to all who participated and supported the event.
